How long does it take for refunds to process? Also, remember to take into consideration the time it takes for your financial institution to post the refund to your account or for you to receive it by mail. If you file a complete and accurate paper tax return, your refund should be issued in about six to eight weeks from the date IRS receives your return.


If you file your return electronically, your refund should be issued in less than three weeks, even faster when you choose direct deposit. Generally, as long as your original e-file was submitted prior to the April deadline and the return is accepted by April , your return is still considered timely. If your return is accepted after that date, it is considered late.

You can still e-file after April 20. However, at that point the return may be considered late. Or, you can call to ask how long you have to request a refund.

Note that those who choose direct deposit for their tax refund will receive it about a week sooner than if is mailed. It is also important to note that if you do drop a class after the deadline has expire you will not receive a refund for that class.
